CUMBRIA'S police and crime commissioner Peter McCall has released a statement saying how embarrassed he is after being handed a speeding fine.

Mr McCall will attend a speed awareness course in the next few weeks, after being clocked doing 36mph in a 30mph zone.

In a statement, he said: "As police and crime commissioner, I have always said that I would not shy away from difficult issues and I believe that you should always speak the truth no matter how difficult a situation.

"I have received a speeding ticket as a result of travelling at 36mph in a 30mph limit in early August. This was whilst I was on holiday outside the county.

"I am obviously embarrassed by this offence.

"I have referred myself to the Police and Crime Panel and will make a statement to the panel at their meeting on October 11.

"I have notified the Independent Police Complaints Commission about this matter and expect the panel to formally refer it to them.

"Speeding is one of the consistent issues that people raise with me across the county. I am fully aware of the negative impact that speeding can have on peoples’ lives and that makes the disappointment even more hard hitting for me.

"I have opted to attend a speed awareness course in the coming weeks."
