A Cumbrian man has gone on trial accused of killing an ex-paramedic in a hotel.
Michael Andrew Sanderson, of Arkleby Hall Cottages, Arkleby, near Aspatria, today appeared in Manchester Crown Court charged with the murder of Terence Edward Taylor.
Mr Taylor, known as Terry, was attacked in the early hours of May 31 last year in The Globe Hotel, Cockermouth.
His injuries were so severe it caused a brain haemorrhage and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
Richard Pratt QC, prosecuting, told the jury that Sanderson and Taylor, who lived in the Oldham area, had been part of a group from an Aspatria pub that were out on a "pub crawl".
The prosecution say that Sanderson turned violent later on in the night and attacked the retired paramedic.
Sanderson, 31, denies murder.
The trial continues.
