FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a blaze at a Barrow property which has destroyed a garage.

Five fire engines were called to Helmsley Drive in Ormsgill at about 1pm following reports of a house fire.

On arrival, crews found smoke billowing from the garage attached to the house and extinguished the flames using water jets. The garage roof has been completely destroyed.

It's believed the fire may have started from an appliance in the garage.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

A nearby resident said: "I thought it was rain clouds at first but then realised it was smoke.

"The windows in the conservatory are black with soot."

Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and hosed down detected hot spots.

Crews from Barrow, Ulverston and Walney were involved.

Police closed Ormsgill Lane near to Helmsley Drive to vehicles while firefighters dealt with the blaze.
