WHEN it comes to passing your driving test there are many unusual tips and lucky charms, but one driving school has topped them all.

Top Gear Driving School has teamed up with the famous Roy's Ices in Bardsea to offer learners free ice-creams to keep them on the road to success.

Drivers who pull off a manoeuvre for the first time or overcome nerves to successfully parallel park in a tight spot during a lesson will win free treats and lollies at the popular ice-cream van.

Learners with the school, which has been providing driving lessons across Barrow and Ulverston since 1992, will be handed reward tokens from instructors, which they can then redeem at Roy's Ices.

Katrina Johnson, owner of Top Gear Driving School, hopes the incentive will steer learners towards ultimately passing their test and help them enjoy lessons.

She said: "The learners love it. It's not about who's the best driver - it's about picking up on individuals who may have got less confidence.

"We want a full, positive experience. It's to encourage self-esteem and a feelgood factor for them."

Quirky driving test superstitions
In the spirit of looking at interesting ways to help new drivers, here are five of the most unusual rituals the AA Driving School is known to have come across.
Crack an egg
The mother of one student cracked an egg on each tyre before her daughter's test. It proved to be good luck as she passed.
Go bananas
After failing three times, one pupil turned to bananas to keep alert. After eating two just before her test, she sailed through and passed on the fourth attempt.
Mummy power
Lucky clothes are common but one pupil took it to the extreme. At her test, a mother put on the T-shirt she wore during childbirth – as well as the trousers she had worn before her child was conceived.
Lucky chocolate
One woman gave her husband a chocolate bar before his HGV test. Every member of the same family has followed the pattern, with them all passing first time. This is certainly a delicious ritual!
Mario and friends
One learner told her instructor the key to improving her steering didn't come on practice runs but by using the Mario Kart steering wheel to brush up on her driving skills.
