THE decision on a controversial plan to build more than 150 new homes on greenfield land in Barrow will now be delayed until the next council meeting.

At the meeting of Barrow Borough Council's planning committee at Barrow Town Hall today, chairwoman Councillor Ann Thomson, said: "There is new evidence for this case that only reached the council yesterday evening (February 1).

"The council has not had chance to fully inspect the evidence, so therefore I will be adjourning this agenda until the next meeting.

"I do apologise for this as I understand there are members of the public who have attended today."

The proposal for 155 dwellings on land off Dalton Lane has been put forward by developers Oakmere Homes, but has attracted strong opposition from local residents.

Many of the reasons for objection are over concerns that the clear boundaries that separate Barrow and Dalton could be lost.

Residents believe that the building of further homes in the area could increase traffic problems, including potentially restricting access to ambulances trying to reach Furness General Hospital.

The planning officer's recommendation in the report set to go before the committee was that the committee reject the plans.
