A BARROW man who fraudulently claimed benefits while he was working has been ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Jonathan Edwards, of Schooner Street in Barrow, was sentenced at Furness Magistrates' Court on June 21 after pleading guilty to two counts of failing to notify the authorities when he started work.

Between March 23 and November 19, 2015, Edwards had claimed jobseekers' allowance and housing benefit without declaring that he was in employment.

The 27-year-old was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months and to pay an £85 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
