A COMMUNITY kitchen in Barrow has come to the aid of a desperate mum who thought about handing over her children to social services after her benefits were wrongfully cut by the government.

On Monday, the Evening Mail told how a 25-year-old mum-of-two from Barrow struggled to provide food for her children after her child tax credits were stopped by Concentrix - a US firm hired by HMRC to identify fraudulent tax credit claims.

As a result of her plight, Sharon Foden and John Wright from Barrow Community Kitchen assembled a huge collection of household essentials to donate to the 25-year-old.

The mum-of-two was left embarrassed after teachers told her that her six-year-old son complained of hunger at school and was incredibly grateful for the kitchen's grand gesture.

She said: "I can't put it into words how grateful I am. It's amazing, especially considering that the kitchen haven't got a clue who I am.

"This will make a massive difference to mine and my children's life and it has made me feel better knowing there will be something in the cupboards for my children when they get home from school.

"They will think that all of their Christmases have come at once."

Following the publication of the article, the mum has been reassured after learning that she is not the only mum who has had her benefits cut at the hands of Concentrix.

She has since joined a Facebook page called "Concentrix Mums" which has more than 11,000 followers and rants to other mums about the struggles she has faced.

The mum added: "It's nice to be supported by them. I am on my own and try to keep it together for my children but it's nice when they have gone to bed to go on Facebook and have a rant about Concentrix.

"I am never going to give up the fight and I am in the process of writing a letter of complaint because of the position they have put me in.

"It is not getting left alone, that's for sure, and when I get my money back, I want an apology. It's not right that they have allowed this to happen to thousands of people."

Mr Wright said: "As soon as her story popped up, we did whatever we could to get something together for her because that's what we do as a community and she is the reason why we set up our kitchen.

"If these politicians had to go through what those who have had their benefits sanctioned have had to endure, they would have changed things a long time ago."
