CHILDREN have been getting in the spirit of World Book Day with a number of fun events at schools across south Cumbria.

For South Walney Infant School, the day was an opportunity to visit some of the area's local libraries, with Year 1 going to Walney Library and Year 2 visiting Barrow Library.

The pupils had been studying the work of Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo , and continued when they arrived at the library, with the pupils reading her work before enjoying a treasure hunt.

Nancy McKinnell, headteacher at the school, said: “We had a book week in school and have been doing things all through it.

“The main focus has been on reading for pleasure and we've had lots of stories over the week.

“We're rounding it off with a big dressing up parade tomorrow.”

Dowdales School in Dalton was also out to develop children's love of reading.

The day was just one in a whole week of celebrating literary works, with competitions, treasure hunts and a staff versus students University Book Challenge.

They also had a 'Drop Everything and Read' activity on Tuesday.

St Pius X Catholic Primary School in Barrow opted for a Harry Potter theme for their day, with students and staff dressing up.
