FIREFIGHTERS have issued a warning to homeowners after a young family had to be evacuated from their Barrow home when a chip pan set on fire.

Crews from Barrow and Ulverston were called to the terraced house in Parker Street, Barrow, at just after 9pm last night after the homeowner called 999.

Firefighters discovered a chip pan had set on fire. The young family, a couple and their baby, had evacuated the house when fire crews arrived.

The fire was put out within 45 minutes.

Firefighters issued a warning to homeowners about chip pan fires.

Their advice is:

  • Call the Fire and Rescue Service on 999 immediately.
  • Don't take risks.
  • Have a clear escape route.
  • Never move the pan.
  • Turn off the heat (if its safe to do so).
  • Never use water on chip pan fires, as this will cause a fireball.
