KEEN walkers strode through Barrow and Walney today as part of a charity walk to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Participants took on a three or five-mile loop of Walney or a 12-mile circuit around Barrow to raise cash for the charity's vital research.

Barbara Dunn, the BHF fundraising manager for Lancashire and South Lakes, helped to organise the event.

Mrs Dunn said: "I'm so grateful for everybody that has made the effort to come down and show their support. We couldn't fund research without the supporters who have taken part in the walk today.

"Three quarters of a million people live with heart failure in the UK which is incredibly debilitating and life threatening so this research is incredibly important both here and around the world."

The funds raised will go towards the Mending Broken Hearts appeal which is aiming to plough £25 million worth of funds into researching regenerative medicine across the UK.

It aims to help repair the heart following a heart attack, which would benefit the majority of heart failure patients.
