THE owner of a multi-million pound regeneration scheme has criticised the council for failing to do its job in keeping Barrow's streets clean.

Barros Trading Ltd, the company behind the £12m Maritime Apartments transformation in Barrow Island, says litter and fly-tipping is now so bad it has had to hire a private cleaner to ensure its streets – Ship, Barque, Brig and Sloop – stay clean.

David Rosenberg, owner, said: "We've have had to employ a person out of our own funds because Barrow Borough Council are not doing their job, it's just not on.

"We have no control over the other streets and the bins are not being cleaned, and the new supplier doesn't come out as regularly as they should.

"Residents are not being educated about what goes in which bin and people are frustrated because nothing is being done.

"We are very proud of what we are doing here, it's an amazing transformation.

"We've put millions of pounds into these streets and it's about time we get help from the outside."

A number of Barrow-born staff who work on the project are also sick of the ongoing problems.

Lisa Hart Pearce is the manager and believes the issue can be solved with a simple solution.

She said: "What makes Barrow Island unique is that we are the only place being forced to use huge communal bins as we don't get the wheelie bins here.

"So everyone is blaming each other for the rubbish and overfilling.

"We've put wheelies on Ship Street, as will soon be on Brig and Barque streets once the landscaping is complete and when Sloop is renovated it will get one too.

"But what a massive difference they make.

"We think all the streets need them but we can't control what other landlords do."
