POLICE cordoned off part of a road in Barrow town centre and arrested six men after an alleged serious assault.

Cavendish Street in Barrow was closed this morning after a serious assault in the early hours of the morning, at around 1.40am.

Police manned the road closure to prevent bystanders from interfering with any potential evidence.

On the road, two spilled takeaway boxes and what appeared to be blood were close to the junction with Duke Street.

Police said six men had been arrested and taken to Barrow and Kendal police stations. The information was released at around 5am this morning.

A 22-year-old man from Barrow was taken to Furness General Hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

One of the men arrested was later released. The five still in custody, as of 2pm on Wednesday, are aged 23, 29, 31, 33 and 34.
