PEOPLE with rare blood types are being asked to keep appointments with the National Blood Donation Service in the coming weeks.

While extra donation events were held in Manchester following Monday's devastating terrorist attack at the Manchester Evening News Arena, bosses within the service claim they now have enough supplies for those being treated in hospital.

Instead, they are urging people to attend upcoming sessions in their area to help ensure there is enough blood for those in need nationwide.

Mike Stredder, director of blood donation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "Our thoughts are with the people affected by this tragic incident.

“We were able to respond to the recent events in Manchester, meeting the demand for blood and blood products from the hospitals who are treating the casualties.

"This is thanks to our loyal blood donors whose donations help us every day to save and improve the lives of patients.

“Thank you for thinking of giving blood at this time.

"We do have all the blood required for hospital patients at the present time. If you have an appointment to give blood in the next few days, please do your best to keep it."

A series of planned blood donation sessions are set to be held across Furness this summer.

A team of medics from the blood donation team are holding an event at Chequers Hotel, in Dalton, this afternoon - though appointments must now be booked online.

A second session is planned for Tuesday, May 30, at the Coronation Hall, in Ulverston, between 1.45pm and 3.45pm and 4.45pm and 7.15pm.

And a third donation event is scheduled for Barrow on Thursday, June 8 between 12.45pm and 2.45pm and 3.45pm and 5.45pm.

Blood stocks are used for people who have been hurt in an accident, are undergoing surgery or who are suffering from serious illnesses, including cancer.

Most people aged between 17 and 66-years-old, who weighs more than 7st 12lbs and 50kg and in good general health can give blood.

The age limit is increased 70-years-old for people who have given blood before and over 70 for anyone who has donated in the last two years.

A number of restrictions apply however for those receiving medical treatment, people who have had a recent tattoo or women who are pregnant.
