The 17 US-bound students will see landmarks including Times Square, Wall Street, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. There will also be a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Finance, Grand Central Station and Central Park and a theatre visit to Chicago on Broadway.

The sixth formers are excited  about  getting a taste of the city that never sleeps.
Kayleigh Hambly and Josh Read are among 17 students who visit New York in February

Kayleigh Hambly, of Millom, whose subjects include A-Level film studies, said it would be exciting to see the iconic streets where so many blockbuster films were made.

She said: “I’m looking forward to everything, I’ve wanted to go to New York my whole life. I’d like to visit the 9/11 museum because of its place in history and also see the landmarks including the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty as well as going shopping.”

Josh Read, of Barrow, who studies an A-Level in drama and theatre alongside maths, further maths and physics, is going on his second college trip to New York but said he expects to see many different aspects this time. He said: “I can’t wait to go back and I will know my way round a lot more this time. It’s good to experience new cultures and see the New York way of life first-hand because city living is so different to what we have here.

“Last year when we went, we had a snowball fight in Central Park and I hope that it snows again there. We saw Cabaret last time and I can’t wait to see Chicago.”

They will be accompanied by drama and theatre tutor Kevin Major and business tutor Helen Gibson.

Mr Major said it was a great experience for the students to enjoy spending time in a busy, multi-cultural city and broaden their horizons.

“Our role as a college is to provide our students with a range of opportunities that bring learning to life, expand their interests and help them develop as a person.

“We are really proud to have this trip to New York in the college calendar where there is something new to see around every corner. Our students return full of enthusiasm for overseas travel and are inspired by what they have seen.”
