A Barrow grandmother has thanked her 7-year-old grandson Fynn for saving her life after she had a health scare at Lakes Aquarium.

Mrs Catherine Maxwell, who is in her early 60's was on a family day out with her husband and young grandson Fynn, on September 19, when she started feeling unwell.

Mrs Maxwell who has a history of heart problems thought it was an angina attack and informed her grandson she was feeling faint.

As the pain got worse she started sweating profusely, desperately attempting to take off her shirt.

Fynn acted quickly and alerted a passing tourist, as well as the aquarium staff that his grandmother was in pain.

Luckily a first aider was able to see to Mrs Maxwell while they waited for an ambulance to arrive to take her to Furness General Hospital.

Doctors discovered that Mrs Maxwell had a leak in her bowel and two days later she was operated on.

Mrs Maxwell said she owes her life to her young grandson and branded him a hero.

"He has saved my life. Without him, I wouldn't be here. He's super intelligent for his age and to know what to do and do it so calmly is amazing.

"He's so aware and very mature for his age. At the time I knew I was in trouble and I didn't want to die in front of my grandson."

Fynn has basic first aid knowledge which he has gained through his sports team Marsh Hornets. He is also aware of his grandmother's health issues because the family openly discuss it with him.

Mrs Maxwell added: "This highlights that younger children are more aware nowadays and they're not frightened about illness. They're not fazed by it and they shouldn't be."

Mrs Maxwell also thanked staff at Furness General Hospital and said she couldn't have been in better hands.

"The staff were fantastic, especially the nurses who never once left my side and kept hold of my hand."

The North West Ambulance service have said: "paramedics attended the scene and Mrs Maxwell was immediately sent to Furness General Hospital."
