A BARROW vodka thief carried out a one-off offence during a low time, a court heard.

Matthew David Holland yesterday pleaded guilty to one charge of theft during a hearing at Furness Magistrates' Court. The 37-year-old, of Newport Street, Barrow, admitted taking the £16.99 bottle of Russian Standard from the Co-op in Oxford Street, Barrow, on February 28.

The court heard the theft took place during a rough time, when Holland’s girlfriend had thrown him out, but he is now back in his relationship and back at work. He was ordered to pay a £160 fine, £16.99 compensation, £85 court costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
