A BARROW shoplifter who was sentenced to a home curfew this Christmas and New Year wished the magistrates a "Merry Christmas" as he left court.

Andrew Stuart Nelson appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court, in Barrow, today and pleaded guilty to stealing items valued at £75.11 from B&M Bargains in Barrow in August.

The court heard that Nelson, 34, carried out the shoplifting with another person who has been dealt with through the court and sentenced to a community order after also admitting the offence.

An item such as a boxed kettle had been stolen.

Defending Nelson, Mr Michael Graham, said the defendant had been in an "unstable position and condition" at the time but that he was engaging with support agencies.

The magistrates sentenced Nelson, of Egerton Court, Barrow, to a curfew from 7pm to 7am for eight weeks. He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

On leaving court Nelson said he hoped he wouldn't be back in court and wished them a "Merry Christmas".
