NERVOUS students from across Furness, Millom and the South Lakes will finally receive their GCSE results tomorrow.

One year on from collecting his GCSE results, Jacob McSweeney has his sights set on a career as a doctor. The 17-year-old is inspired to help others, just like the medics who have treated his mum for cancer.

Jacob actually changed his A-Level subject choices after being taken aback by his impressive GCSE results.

The Barrow student had been interested in law, but on discovering his GCSE grades he was given the boost to realise that he could work towards going to medical school and becoming a doctor.

Jacob achieved three A*s, five As, a B and a C at St Bernard's Catholic High School, in Barrow.

He said: "I was really happy and quite surprised with my GCSE results and my A* in further additional science.

"After my GCSEs, I changed my mind about what I wanted to do. I always wondered if I had the ability to study medicine, because I love the idea of helping people."

Jacob was the Love Barrow Awards Young Citizen of the Year winner in 2014 for his great fundraising efforts in aid of Cancer Research UK. He raises money for the charity as his mum, Lisa McSweeney, receives treatment for breast cancer.

Now Jacob would like to be a doctor so he can treat people, just like the medics who have been helping his mum.

He said: "Fundraising was what I could do at the time to help, but now I would like to help people and treat them as a doctor."

After collecting his GCSE results, Jacob got in touch with Barrow Sixth Form College, part of Furness College, and changed his A-Level subjects.

He said: "It was quite easy to change my subjects. I contacted my link tutor and I said I'd had a change of heart.

"They were very helpful, and I wanted to change every subject apart from maths."

He now studies A-Levels in biology, chemistry and maths, and has already completed AS law. Jacob is on the honours programme at the college and has had a successful first year.

The student is taking part in placements in the care sector, including care homes and Furness General Hospital. He is also taking part in university events.

Busy Jacob is also a presenter on Cando FM; his show is on Mondays from 5pm to 7pm , and he is involved with starting up a new Student Union for Furness College, with representatives from both campuses.
