FIVE men arrested in connection was an alleged street attack in Barrow have been bailed by police.

Cavendish Street in Barrow was closed yesterday morning between the junctions with Dalkeith Street and Duke Street after a serious assault in the early hours at around 1.40am.

Police manned the road closure to prevent bystanders from interfering with any potential evidence.

On the road, two spilled takeaway boxes and what appeared to be blood were close to the junction with Duke Street.

A 22-year-old man from Barrow was taken to Furness General Hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening. He remains in hospital this morning but detectives said he is expected to be discharged soon.

Police are now examining CCTV in the area of the incident in a bid to gather evidence.

Five men - a 23-year-old from Barrow, a 29-year-old from Stainton, a 31-year-old from Barrow, a 33-year-old from Stockton-on-Tees and a 33-year-old from Durham, were arrested and have since been bailed until November 25 and 26.

Anyone who witnessed a disturbance in the Cavendish Street and Duke Street area of Barrow at the time is asked to call Barrow CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
