A Barrow shoplifter has been jailed after stealing aftershave from a department store.

Andrew Hackett was jailed for four weeks for stealing aftershave, valued at £47, from Debenhams in Portland Walk, Barrow.

Hackett , 30, appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court today and pleaded guilty to the offence which happened on Friday.

The court heard that the offence was committed while Hackett, of Rawlinson Street, was on bail.

Mr Michael Graham, defending Hackett, said it was an "unsophisticated theft" and that the defendant had stolen the item so he could buy a present for a family member.

Mr Graham said Hackett has been liaising with Probation, Unity and other services.

The magistrates said while it was a small value theft, it was committed while on bail.

In addition to the custodial sentence, Hackett was ordered to pay £47 compensation, £85 costs and a £115 victim surcharge.
