A SCHOOLGIRL from Barrow was airlifted to a specialist children's hospital with numerous injuries after she was knocked down by a car.

The 11-year-old girl was involved in a collision with a silver Kia Carens in Friars Lane, Barrow, yesterday afternoon.

The incident happened at about 3.30pm and the North West Air Ambulance Service was called to the scene due to the serious nature of the girl's injuries.

A spokeswoman from the North West Ambulance Service said the girl had sustained various injuries and the 999 call was received by them at 3.29pm.

The air ambulance landed at the nearest suitable location in the playing field of Cambridge Primary School and medics flew her to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

In addition to the helicopter, a land ambulance and senior paramedics attended the scene.

A police spokesman said the driver of the car, a 44-year-old from Ulverston, was not injured in the incident.

Police closed Friars Lane between Monks Brow and Provincial Street for three hours as they investigated the scene.
