A BARROW school has been inspired to host its own coffee morning in honour of a pupil whose relative recently died from cancer.

Melissa Redhead, 25, who lives in Askam, recently suffered heartache after a family member died from the disease and encouraged Newton Primary School to host a cake sale and coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Her daughter, Ella Greaves, three, goes to the school's nursery and together with other children donned her pinny and chef hat to bake up a storm in preparation for tomorrow's fundraiser.

Miss Redhead said: "It's important to make sure that we do something. My relative got a lot of help from Macmillan towards the end of his life so it is a charity that means an awful lot to me.

"It is a lovely little school where everybody supports one another through difficult times. It really is the perfect place to hold this event."

Laura Davidson, a teacher at the school, helped the children bake an assortment of fairy cakes to sell at tomorrow's coffee morning which starts at 9.15am.

She said: "Cancer is something that affects all of us and as a school we wanted to do something to raise money. The children have been so excited to bake the cakes and everyone in the school has wanted to do their bit for the cause."

As part of the mammoth fundraiser dubbed "the world's biggest coffee morning", a number of schools, churches and halls across South Cumbria will open up their doors for different personal reasons.

St Mary's Primary School in Dalton will be holding an event from 10am tomorrow morning to celebrate the life of parent Joanne Hulbert, who died aged 42 in August from breast cancer.

Mrs Hulbert, whose son Charlie goes to the Coronation Drive school, was described by teacher and friend Lisa Robinson as "a brilliant classroom helper", who was dedicated to doing her bit for the school.

She added: "Joanne was a brilliant mum to Charlie and I know that she loved him dearly and was always so proud of his achievements.

"She was a memory maker. She lit up a room as she walked in and charmed everyone with her witty sense of humour. She was incredibly strong and a fantastic friend to have."

Another poignant tribute will take place at St Aiden's Church Hall in Middle Hill, Barrow, from 9am tomorrow where Jo-Ann Ellis has organised a coffee morning in memory of her son Jake who died from a cancerous tumour when he was five.

Together with her family, Mrs Ellis has raised more than £130,000 for the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group and is hoping to make money for the charity on what would have been her son's 13th birthday.
