A SCHOOL managed to raise almost £4,000 for a cancer charity after a mammoth fundraising drive.

After a Race for Life event in July, which saw more than 200 pupils dress up in colourful gear and run laps of the school playing fields, Dane Ghyll Primary School in Barrow managed to raise £3,742 for Cancer Research UK.

The school's joint headteacher, Caron Reynolds, said: "This is the first time we have ever done anything like this but we'll be doing an annual event now every year.

"It's the biggest amount that we have ever raised as a school and we were completely overwhelmed by the response from the parents and children."

The race served as a poignant reminder for many of the children as they created flags for loved ones they have lost to cancer.

However, the school encouraged the children to use the event to celebrate their lives.

Mrs Reynolds added: "Every child knows somebody who has been touched by cancer so this was an important event for us and we had lots of assemblies to talk about how cancer research helps people across the country.

"Everybody took it to their hearts and made a huge effort. We are so proud of the children and their achievements."
