A ROAD in Barrow which has already been closed for more than a week is to remain shut amid fears over the safety of a building destroyed in a fire.

Abbey Road in Barrow, between Ramsden Square and Dalkeith Street has been closed since Wednesday after flames engulfed the building known as the House of Lords.

Diversions have been put in place and Cumbria Police has urged people to stay away from the building which is at risk of collapsing.

Roger Exley, station manager for Cumbria Fire and Rescue service, confirmed that an investigation between police and fire chiefs is taking place.

He said: "We are waiting for the loss adjusters to bring a structural engineer to the scene to look at the condition of the building.

Once that is done they will do a survey to see if it is safe to enter.

"We are meeting with police and other agencies on Friday afternoon to discuss the ongoing fire and police investigation."
