BARROW pupils have come up with a fresh idea to build a healthy business.

Children from Holy Family Catholic Primary School have teamed up with the North-West Evening Mail as part of the Bright Stars project.

Schools across the county are taking part in the entrepreneurial competition, run by the Centre for Leadership Performance.

The contest, which promotes a range of skills, sees schools receive £50 each which they are challenged to turn into a profit for a chosen charity and their school.

The schools are teamed up with mentors from the world of business to give them advice on running their mini businesses.

Holy Family Heroes are working with Clare Fitzgerald, commercial lead at the North-West Evening Mail, for their healthy smoothies and snacks business.

The pupils make fresh fruit smoothies in school each morning and sell them alongside healthy snacks in break times.

All the products cost £50p. The smoothies include berry flavour and mango and pineapple flavour.

The best seller so far has been the fruit yogurt flavoured snack bars.

Emma Stevens, 11, said: "We felt we wanted to sell healthy snacks instead of eating crisps and chocolate.

"We sell the smoothies and healthy snacks in the junior playground during morning break and in the afternoons in the infant playground.

"We have been doing really well. We have already made £250 profit."

The team is looking to hold an event at school where it will sell more healthy refreshments.

Miss Fitzgerald said: "They are very enthusiastic and very well organised. They all have their own roles in the business."
