ENTHUSIASTIC young Barrow pupils have given some tender loving care to their award-winning school gardens after having time off over Christmas and new year.

Green-fingered youngsters at Dane Ghyll School in Barrow have been working hard to restore to the gardens to tip-top condition with Year 5 pupils making bird feeders and wormeries for the wildlife area.

The children also cleared the pond which has become overrun with dead reeds algae as they spruced up the gardens which have been recognised as Cumbria in Bloom winners for the last five years.

Louise Postlethwaite, chief gardener at the school, said: "The school gardens are now part of the children's learning. They all love to spend time in the gardens and wildlife area and are always keen to ensure they are maintained to a high standard, whatever time of year.

"It's colder in the winter months but the children don't mind wrapping up warm and getting hands on.

"The children are fully aware a lot of hard work is needed to ensure our gardens remain award-winning."
