FROM an extract of David Walliams' Gangsta Granny book, to Spike Milligan's On the Ning Nang Nong poem, children wowed an audience at a speech festival.

Pupils from Ormsgill Nursery and Primary School, in Barrow, impressed parents and visitors at their school's first speech festival.

There were class and individual performances of poetry and prepared readings in the school hall.

Denholm Industrial Services donated paint brushes to the school and the pupils put them to good use by creating artwork for the event.

The company also presented awards following the festival, including a trophy to Natasha Armstrong, of Year Six, for her reading of David Walliams' Ratburger.

Headteacher Mick Cull congratulated all the pupils on their festival performances and thanked Denholm Industrial Services for supporting the school.

Mr Cull said: "We saw a festival as a really good way to develop speech and language skills across the school in an exciting way.

"Public speaking and communicating effectively are such important skills for the children to develop. This is also building a love for poetry and reading. The children have been very enthusiastic about the festival."
