BARROW pupils experienced a mock parliament event with their MP.

Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock visited Dane Ghyll Primary School, in Barrow, today, to introduce Year 6 students to the process of debating a motion in the House of Commons.

Mr Woodcock said there was fantastic debating from both sides of the house on their two chosen subjects, limiting the amount of “screen time” for children and financially supporting the homeless.

The Labour MP said: "They debated the issues with passion and rigour, really embracing the parliamentary process and protocols.

"I was delighted to visit the school this week as they are due to visit London soon, including a visit to the Houses of Parliament.

"I am really keen to bring local youngsters closer to our democracy and mock parliament sessions are working well in enthusing children in getting active with politics now or in the future. Our young people should have the very highest aspirations and introducing classes to the basics of our parliamentary democracy can really help raise their interest in changing the world around them for the better.

"Any other schools wishing to take up the offer of a session should contact my constituency office and we’ll get you booked in.”
