EXCITED Barrow pupils met firefighter heroes and learnt about their important role in keeping the community safe.

The Green Watch crew from the town's fire station paid a visit to Newbarns Primary School on Wednesday.

The nursery class are learning about 'people who help us' and the teachers arranged for the firefighters to come along to school in a fire engine.

The three and four-year-olds were amazed to see the firefighters in their safety kit.

They learnt all about the tools used in fires or in a road accident.

The highlight of the session was when the youngsters got to have a go at using the fire hoses.

Karen Bremner, a nursery teacher at Newbarns said: "The children were excited and they really enjoyed it. The best bit for them was using the hose.

"We have been teaching them about the fire service, but it is never quite the same as having them in school."
