KEEN young gardeners at a Barrow primary school have been enjoying the fruits of their labours.

Dane Ghyll school's award-winning gardens have been looking better than ever thanks to the sponsorship they have received from BAE Systems.

Headteacher Garry Schofield said: "With help from local businesses such as BAE, we are able to increase the scope of our growing.

"This term, with the BAE sponsorship, we have bought weed matting, seed potatoes, onion sets, compost and seeds for some more exotic plants, including pomegranates.

"This will mean we can expand the produce that has seen figs, lemons, melons and grapes as part of our planting scheme."

The Barrow school's gardens have been Cumbria in Bloom winners from 2012 to 2016 and, last September, they were declared as the overall winners in Barrow Borough Council Housing Service’s annual garden competition.

The school's gardener Louise Postlethwaite said: "Dane Ghyll Primary School would like to say a huge thank you to BAE systems for their help in sponsoring the schools award winning gardens.

"Having been awarded the best school gardens in Barrow and in Cumbria the school is always looking for help in many ways to keep the gardens in shape and producing fruit and vegetables for the school kitchen."
