TWO best friends are taking on the challenge of a lifetime for a good cause.

BAE project managers Laura Carter, 25, and Sarah Logan, 30, hope to set the world record for the highest game of football ever played when they climb Mount Kilimanjaro in October.

The girls from Barrow will join a group of 40 fundraisers who will be climbing Africa's highest mountain in aid of cancer charity, The Steve Prescott Foundation.

But the girls are taking the challenge one step further by setting a world record and playing a full 90-minute game of football when they reach the summit.

All funds raised will go towards fighting a rare form of cancer.

The Steve Prescott foundation was set up in 2007, taking it's name from a man who despite pioneering surgery, died from a rare form of cancer (pseudomyxoma peritonei) which usually begins in the appendix.

The charity supports both the Christie Cancer hospital in Manchester and the Rugby League Benevolent fund.

Miss Carter was motivated to support the charity after the mother of her friend, Fern Cloudsdale, died after suffering from the same form of the disease.

Miss Carter said: "I think everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer.

"I just want to live in a world where we can beat it and it does not beat us."

Miss Cloudsdale's mother was only the third person to ever receive the same operation as Mr Prescott but, despite its success, she died a few months later due to a blood clot.

Miss Logan said: "It's for a really rare form of cancer. So far it's [the operation] helped to save three lives."

Out of thousands of applicants, Miss Logan and Miss Carter were lucky enough to be chosen to take part in the expedition and are proud to be representing their local area.

Miss Logan added: "The others are mostly from St Helen's Rugby Club so it's nice that the two of us are from Barrow."

Miss Logan started going out climbing with Miss Carter as a way to make herself feel healthier and happier.

She said: "I just had not had the best year but this has made me feel miles better. I think it's good for anyone who is feeling really down or is suffering with depression or anxiety. I feel like a totally different person. Now instead of going out at the weekend and getting drunk I go out climbing with Laura."

Before the climb, the girls have organised various fundraising events, the first of which will be a charity cricket match held at Furness Cricket Club on May 26.
