PUPILS at a new Barrow nursery enjoyed a frozen classroom challenge.

Youngsters at the Little Lambs nursery, at St Pius X Catholic Primary School, have been looking at winter as a theme.

Children arrived at class to find that some toys had been frozen in ice and they had to work together to melt or break the ice.

Some decide to use salt or break the ice to release the toys.

They also had a ball making artificial snow and playing with their toys in the snow.

The children looked at ways how people stay warm in the cold conditions. They wrapped up in warm jackets, hats and scarves and had warm milk.

The session was also helping to raise awareness of the Age UK's Spread the Warmth campaign in the school community. The campaign encourages communities to support older people through the winter months and stop isolation, by visiting, making sure they have basic food, helping to pick up prescriptions, helping them to avoid falls, encouraging them to keep warm and helping them get a benefits check.

The new nursery opened in September to meet the needs of parents.

Gemma Carter, one of the nursery leaders alongside Mandy Berry, said: "We are getting lots of really positive feedback about our nursery. The children love being here and they are coming on leaps and bounds.

"We are creating an exciting learning environment through exploration and play."

The nursery also holds regular story time sessions which parents get involved with.

The school also runs popular breakfast and after school clubs.
