A RECKLESS motorist who crashed into a granddad's car, overturning it and fleeing the scene, was due to be sentenced by a court today. (Monday)
Callum Jake Wharton, 21, of Greengate Street appeared at Preston Crown Court on January 27 and pleaded guilty to charges of driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to stop after a collision, failing to report a collision and intending to pervert the course of justice.
Wharton is set to be sentenced at Preston Crown Court over the incident which happened in Friars Lane, Barrow on June 13 last year.
The defendant was driving a Ford Focus car which crashed into Ray Hayes' Honda CR-V car. The Honda was shunted into a tree and a lamp post before it overturned outside Mr Hayes' home. Mr Hayes' family and neighbours raced to help him and call the emergency services.
The 54-year-old had to be freed from the car and he was left with a broken arm and needing surgery on his knee.
