A MAN was taken to hospital after a chip pan set his house on fire in Barrow.

Fire crews were called at around 5.30 this evening to reports of a person trapped inside a burning building at Raglan Court.

Barrow fire engine rushed to the scene and received backup from the Ulverston crew and on-call pump, in addition to an ambulance.

On arrival, crews discovered one casualty, a male, who was suffering from smoke inhalation but was already out of the property.

He was taken to Furness General Hospital for a check-up.

The blaze was extinguished using one hose reel, two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and positive pressure ventilation.

Acting crew manager Browning reported that the fire was caused by chip pan that had been left on, causing damage to the kitchen and further smoke damage.

He said: "It's not something we see much anymore but they are nasty, horrible things.

"When we do our safety talks and we hear of people using them, if we consider it to be a danger we do offer people a deep fat fryer, but not many people use chip pans anymore."
