A 33-year-old smashed a chip shop window because voices in his head were threatening him.

Andrew Pell appeared before Furness Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday where he admitted causing £115.20 of criminal damage to a Barrow business on October 8.

Prosecutor Mr Lee Dacre said: “The defendant walked passed the Olympic takeaway and punched the window causing it to smash.

“He left forensic evidence at the scene so was traced by that. He told police he had been angry and had taken it out on the window.”

Mr Dacre told the hearing that Pell, of Northern Healthcare, Abbey Road, Barrow, had not been before the courts since 2002.

Miss Maureen Fawcett, defending said: “Mr Pell has admitted he smashed the window from the outset and has pleaded guilty today.

“On that night he was walking passed the Olympic, his medication wasn’t right and the voices in his head were threatening him. As a result he smashed the window.

“He is now on the correct medication and is described as one of the politest and quietest men in the home. This happened as a result of his mental health issues.

“He doesn’t have an income as such but is given £20 a day by social services or whenever he needs it. He is on Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance.”

Magistrates gave Pell a conditional discharge for a period of 12 months. he was also told to pay £115.20 to the Olympic. He must also pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
