A MAN has appeared in court charged with causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving.

John Bromley, 81, died instantly when the Ford Fiesta he was driving collided with a transit van, driven by Richard Cupid, on the A5087 Beach Road between Rampside and Roosecote.

Cupid, 30, of Newbarns Road, Barrow, appeared at Preston Crown Court where he denied causing Mr Bromley’s death by driving dangerously.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around midday on May 17 of last year.

Cupid and a female passenger, were taken to Furness General Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries. Mr Bromley, of Roa Island, Barrow, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cupid also denied a second charge of causing serious injury to his passenger by dangerous driving.

Judge Robert Altham made an interim driving disqualification meaning Cupid is not allowed to drive until further notice. Cupid will return to court on April 10 when he will stand trial.
