A 21-year-old Barrow man has admitted to being in possession of 80 tranquilizers in a mental health unit.

Keanu Rhys Logan also pleaded guilty to stealing four pairs of Firetrap boxer shorts when he appeared before Furness Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Mr Lee Dacre explained: "He was found in possession of 80 Diazapam tablets when police searched his room. They were in a tissue box.

"The theft matter relates to an incident where a suspicious male was seen in the store and later when stock and CCTV were checked he was seen to steal the boxer shorts."

Logan, of Low White Close, Barrow admitted theft from Sports Direct on January 26 worth £70 and possession of a class C controlled between September 23 and 24 at The Dova Unit, Furness General Hospital, Dalton Lane, Barrow.

Defence solicitor Mr Michael Graham said: "The matter of possession relates to other matters that has already been dealt with by the courts and he has served a custodial sentence.

"This was for criminal damage and a public order offence. So he has been punished at the highest level.

"The theft circumstances were that he was trying to sort out his Universal Credit and was living hand to mouth. He stole the boxers to sell on to buy food.

"In the last six months he has been in one mental health unit or another as his mental health has not been stable.

"While in prison he was diagnosed with a personality disorder and has been given medication to stabilise his moods."

Magistrates fined him £40 for the possession and £100 for the theft. He was told to pay £70 in compensation to the sports shop, £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
