A 22-YEAR-OLD man who spat at shoppers after headbutting a Barrow store window in a drunken rage has been labelled as an "idiot" by a magistrate.

Courtney Moore, of St Vincent Street, Barrow, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and committing a section 4 public order offence at Furness Magistrates' Court today.

Lee Dacre, prosecuting, told the court how Moore drunk a whole bottle of vodka before headbutting the glass doorway of Poundworld in Dalton Road, Barrow, at 6:05pm yesterday.

He was then taken away from the store and led up Dalton Road by an unknown male before approaching two people with his fists clenched.

Members of the public were frightened by Moore's actions as he threatened them with violence and spat at them in his drunken state.

Moore, who has recently come out of prison, was later arrested and handcuffed by police but continued to act in a disorderly manner as he was restrained in front of a large crowd in Dalton Road.

The defendant, who represented himself in court, said that he reacts badly to drinking vodka and is known to be violent after drinking it.

Presiding magistrate, Sharon Gillam, labelled Moore an "idiot" but gave him the opportunity to reform as she handed him a 12-week sentence suspended for 12 months.

She said: "Basically you were just an idiot knowing what vodka does to you when you drink it and knowing you've just got out of prison.

"You were free but now you are not.

"We are going to give you a second chance. If you do any more offences within 12 months you are looking at a 12-month sentence."

He was given a four-week suspended sentence for criminal damage and an eight-week suspended sentence for the section 4 public order offence.

Moore has also been handed a curfew meaning that he must not leave his home address between 5pm and 5am for the next 12 weeks.

He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £115.

No application has been made by Poundworld for compensation for the damage caused to the doorway of the Dalton Road store.
