A MAN has been charged with a terrorism offence after threats were allegedly made against LGBT people attending a gay pride event in Barrow.

Ethan Stables, 19, of Egerton Court in Barrow, has been charged with an offence under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

The investigation relates to Barrow police receiving intelligence on Friday evening that there were plans to attack people attending an LGBT event at the New Empire, in Barrow town centre.

The intelligence led to a huge police presence at the venue and 19-year-old Stables was arrested later that night.

Stables has been remanded into custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.

Under section 58 of the act, a person commits an offence if they collect or make a record of information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism or he possesses a document or record containing information of that kind.

Cumbria Counter Terrorism officers said they are continuing to work with colleagues from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.
