A YOUNG man from Barrow has been charged with a string of motoring offences and attempting to pervert the course of justice after a crash which left a car overturned.

Paramedics, police and firefighters were called to a two-vehicle crash in Friars Lane in Barrow at 12.54pm on June 13 of this year.

A green Ford Focus had crashed into a silver Honda car, causing the Honda to hit a tree and a lamp post and then overturn on the driver's side.

At the time, police said it was alleged that three men inside the Ford had fled the scene.

Neighbours and the family of the Honda driver, 53-year-old Ray Hayes, rushed to help him.

Mr Hayes was able to climb out of the passenger side of the car. He was treated for minor injures at the scene and was taken to Furness General Hospital.

A Facebook post made by the victim's son, appealing for witnesses and information, has been shared more than 2,000 times.

Police have now confirmed that 21-year-old Callum Jake Wharton, of Greengate Street, Barrow, has been charged with driving without insurance, driving while banned, failing to stop after a collision, failing to report a collision and intending to pervert the course of justice.

Wharton is due to appear at Furness Magistrates' Court in Barrow on Thursday December 29.
