A MAN has been charged after allegedly threatening to blow up his flat in the Ormsgill area of Barrow.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to a flat in Broad Close in Barrow at around 7.15pm on Monday to reports of a man threatening to blow up a property.

Residents were evacuated and police negotiators were drafted in to persuade the resident to hand himself over to officers.

The stand-off reached a conclusion at around 1.45am Tuesday morning after the man was arrested.

Michael John Joe Byrne, of Broad Close, Barrow, has since been charged with threatening to destroy property.

The 61-year-old appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court today where he was remanded in custody and will stand trial at Preston Crown Court on July 14.
