A BARROW labourer caught carrying two three-inch knives is due to be sentenced at crown court.

When stopped by police in Greengate Street on July 28, Ian Anthony Wharton was heard to say "yeah yeah I have two knives" moments before officers found the blades.

Today Furness Magistrates' Court heard Wharton's claims that he used the knives for work, but when questioned could not explain why they were as new, and untarnished.

Prosecuting, Pam Ward said: "He said he knew he shouldn't have them but said he had nowhere to keep them. He said he bought them from a corner shop but could not comment on how the blades had not been spoiled."

Wharton, of Broad Close, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a knife blade in a public place.

Based on the seriousness of the offence, magistrates declined jurisdiction, sending the case to crown court for sentencing.

The defendant will go before a judge at Preston Crown Court on Friday September 15.
