Oakmere Homes wants to build 44 houses with car parking and landscaping on vacant land close to Meadowlands Avenue, in Barrow.

The Kendal-based company has applied to Barrow Borough Council for full planning consent for its Newbarns residential estate.

The company has said the properties will be predominantly two storey and in keeping with the character of the area.

The plans show three and four bed detached and semi-detached houses in six styles. There are also double and single garage options.

The site is located on land to the east of Meadowlands Avenue. It is bounded by the properties on Meadowlands Avenue and Maylands Grove to the west, with agricultural fields to the north, east and south.

The location has been allocated as ‘potentially developable’ housing land by the borough.

In its application to the borough council, Oakmere Homes says the proposals would make "a positive contribution to housing land supply in Barrow Borough Council and more specifically Barrow-in-Furness itself.

"The proposed development will result in the creation of high quality environment and comprises a compatible use in keeping with the neighbouring uses in the immediate surrounds of the site.

"The site lies in the eastern edge of Barrow-in-Furness and therefore offers a location with excellent access to local services. With proposed vehicular access to the new dwelling being taken from Meadowlands Avenue and the associated bus services on Flass Lane, the development can promote the use of sustainable transport modes and reduce reliance on the private car."

Yesterday, the site was under some standing water.

The application included a flood risk assessment, which said: "The site is considered to be at a very low risk of flooding and the proposed drainage strategy and use of SUDS methods, along with the external works design should further reduce any potential flood risk on site and mitigate the effects of surface water run‐off from site affecting areas off‐site."

The plans are likely to go before the Barrow Borough Council planning committee, but a date has yet to be set.
