FIREFIGHTERS were making a splash at the weekend for a good cause.

Barrow Fire Station invited families to pay to have their cars washed with all funds going to charity.

A total of £939.16 was raised for the Fire Fighters Charity which supports members of the fire service who are ill, injured or in need of psychological support.

Crew manager Mike Dobson, 48, who was running the event, said: "It was very busy. We never stopped for the five hours that we out doing the cars. It just shows that we are very well supported by the public."

Children were also invited to get a closer look at the fire engines and other lifesaving equipment.

For a few avid fans of Fireman Sam it was a real treat.

Russell Crellin, father of Walter Crellin, said: "We just came along for the day to see the fire engine. He's obsessed with them. He's seen them at various open days as well and just loves to come down."

Crew members were also on hand to talk to the youngsters and help out with the car wash.

Firefighter Emma Hutchinson, 23, said: "It's a great family thing. All the kids can come and see what we do and have a play on the fire engine.

The Fire Fighters Charity offers a range of support to individuals across the service.

In 2015/16 the charity supported 5,107 current and former fire service employees.

Jamie Coward, 43, watch manager, added: "There's been a fantastic turn out and it's been great to see so many people coming to support the charity.

"We'd just like to thank everyone for the attendance and amazing support."
