HEROIC Barrow firefighters braved a raging torrent of water to save three people's lives – including two police officers.

The crew, from Barrow fire station's blue watch, were among dozens of firefighters from around the county who sprung into action last December as Storm Desmond wreaked havoc.

Their determination and bravery saved the lives of a woman and two police officers – and earned them a special mention at last night's #SpiritofCumbria awards.

Crew manager Mike Dobson and firefighters Chris Corkill, Ben Jones and Dave Brodie were on their way back from another rescue, when they were tasked to rescue Angela Richardson.

The terrified woman was stranded in her car "somewhere near Sizergh Castle", with water rising around her.

With just five per cent of her phone battery left, she had no idea where she was – relying on Vicky Lusk, a control operator, and local firefighters to direct her rescuers.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council Fire and Rescue Service said: "Once she was located, it was apparent that the car had come to a stop in what was later found out to be a fast-flowing river.

"They eventually had to smash the rear windscreen to rescue Angela."

The firefighters immediately treated her for hypothermia and shock, giving her oxygen and wrapping her in warm clothes.

However, it was not the end of the drama.

While en route to hospital, the crew were called to help two police officers whose vehicle was stuck in flood water on the A590.

"Once located, and with the water level now up to the fire appliance windscreen, Dave and Ben managed to open the appliance rear door and pull the two officers to safety," said the fire spokesman.

"Once the police officers were on board, one of them lost consciousness. Dave and Ben assisted and managed to bring him round."

He added: "Angela and the two officers were taken to hospital in Barrow by another vehicle, as the Barrow fire appliance finally succumbed to water damage.

"There is no doubt that the heroism and professionalism displayed by all those involved in this rescue, including the control operator and managers in north west fire control, saved the lives of three people that night."
