THE family of a Barrow woman who died 11 years ago are planning to celebrate what would have been her 30th birthday with a charity black-and-white party next month.

Nicola Whitehead died at the age of 19 - only five weeks after having her son Kai.

Nicola died from a childbirth-induced blood clot which spread to her brain. This went undetected for some time after giving birth to her son.

Nicola died in intensive care at Furness General Hospital and all the money raised at the party will go towards this.

Marie Whitehead, Nicola's mother, said: "She would have been 30 on November 1 so we are celebrating this on November 11.

"if she had been here we would have thrown her a party so this is what we are doing."

The black-and-white themed party will take place at Hawcoat Park Sports and Social Club, Barrow, from 7pm until late.

Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children. There will be a raffle and organisers hope it will be a great way to celebrate the life Nicola had.

Mrs Whitehead said: "We want to show Kai just how many people knew his mum.

"He is the spitting image of her and if you spoke to him you would think he knew her. It is for him as well as to celebrate Nicola's life."

Nicola's parents were both on holiday when she was taken into hospital with the blood clot. She was on life support when they got home and pronounced brain dead.

Her family donated all of her organs to organ donation.

Mrs Whitehead said: "It was a toss-up between giving the money to organ donation or ICU. But in the end it had to be ICU because without them we wouldn't have gotten through that tough time.

"It is only now thanks to them that I am able to talk about her without crying."

The family would like to thank those who have donated prizes for the raffle and all of those who are planning to attend the event.

Those who want to attend are asked to contact Mrs Whitehead through Facebook.
