A BARROW drink-driver has been banned from the roads after being two and a half times over the legal alcohol limit.

Victoria Rose Carroll appeared at Furness Magistrates' Court, in Barrow, yesterday and pleaded guilty to driving while over the alcohol limit.

The court heard Carroll, 35, gave a breath reading of 88 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes of alcohol.

Prosecutor, Mr Peter Kelly, said the defendant was seen to swerve onto the wrong side of the road while driving a Ford Mondeo in Abbey Road at around 5.10pm on August 12.

The worried witness feared there would be an accident so she called the police.

The court heard Carroll was a woman of good character and that she had gone out drinking with the intention of getting a taxi, but things changed for reasons she cannot explain.

Defending Carroll, Mr Michael Graham, said the defendant had received good news and had gone out drinking. Mr Graham said: "She had no intention of driving, but inexplicably she did drive."

Magistrates gave Carroll, of Devon Street, full credit for her guilty plea. She was disqualified from driving for 20 months, fined £200 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
