A COUPLE from Ormsgill in Barrow have been given a suspended jail sentence after admitting stealing a smartphone worth £640 from a town centre shop.

Paul Akred and Louise Jane Smith, both of Low White Close, pleaded guilty to stealing the Samsung Edge phone worth £640 from the Three store in Barrow town centre on September 27.

At Furness Magistrates' Court yesterday, Akred was given an 18-week jail sentence suspended for 12 months.

The 37-year-old was also ordered to pay compensation of £320, a victim surcharge of £85 and £85 in court costs.

Smith, 33, was given a community order and will be fitted with an electronic tag requiring her to remain at her home between the hours of 7pm and 7am every day until November 29.
