BARROW pupils set out on an exciting Lakes adventure to experience the stunning setting of a classic book and film.

Children of St George's CE Primary School enjoyed a Swallows and Amazons inspired trip to Coniston Water.

The pupils have been reading the Arthur Ransome children's adventure book. The school group paddled in canoes from the Water Park Adventure Centre to Peel Island.

They said the scenery was breathtaking, with the woods vibrant in their autumn colours and mountain tops scarfed with snow.

On the island the children worked in teams to set up dens and tuck into steaming sausages.

Pupil Paisley Jones, said she felt "exhilarated".

She said: "I have never been to places like that before and I felt shocked at how beautiful it was."

Parents described the trip as being "ideal for the children's adventurous side" and great for learning about what is around them.

Sally Chapman, outdoor education co-ordinator at the school, said: "At St George’s we feel that a big part of taking the children out is that they talk about their experiences.

"Vocabulary is extended and the writing produced after such a visit is always of a high quality as the children are writing from experience and often from the heart.’’
