A woman has been recognised for stellar voluntary work in Barrow by a national award scheme for local charities.

The proud winner, Louise Kirkland, of Barrow, is one of 66 local winners from across the UK after receiving recognition at the Halifax Giving Extra Awards.

The voluntary work done by Louise has been to help support children with physical and learning difficulties, and for the past four years she has volunteered for the Leonard Cheshire Disability Association and Autis Barrow.

Upon winning, Louise said: "It was such an honour to just be nominated, so I am hugely proud to have actually won.

"I'm lucky to work with a fantastic group of people and love being able to make a difference and support them."

As part of her efforts, she has organised arts and crafts activities, sport and fitness activities and day trips.

Her work has been helping parents and carers of young people she supports to aid their personal development.

She will receive £300 in Supercheque vouchers, and also has the chance of being nominated as a regional winner, which could see her receive £5,000 for her cause.

The Community Ambassador for Halifax Cumbria, Lucy Tonks, said: "The work that Louise has done for the community is outstanding and truly deserves recognition.

"She has truly gone the extra mile for people in the community - and we are delighted to recognise this."
